REGENERATION OF BROWNFIELDS AND GREENFIELD SPACES NEAR THE NARROW-GAUGE RAILWAY SRNETICA – SIPOVO IN THE EXAMPLE OF RESEARCH – PRODUCTION TIMBER CENTER DEVELOPMENT
Abandoned and insufficiently used areas are specific category of areas. Within these areas, there are two other types of areas: previously used areas and previously unused - clear areas. In international scientific and professional circles, these areas are called brownfield and greenfield spaces. Reasons why these areas appear are various. They usually appear as a result of negative sociological, ecological, economic and other circumstances, but also as a result of positive technical-technological advances. It can be said that various factors of creation had defined various types of these areas. The definition of these areas is determined by complex local characteristics of the place where they appeared. Advantages and disadvantages, related to these areas, can be monitored from different spatial aspects – from global to the local aspect. Special attention is paid to ecological issues of these areas as well as to the relation between those areas and the market.
As such, brownfields and greenfields are significant space reserves. The method that is the most suitable for their reuse within the process of urban renewal, coordinated with sustainable development, is regeneration. The execution of this method is suggested to be done in steps and special attention is paid to the spirit and the identity of the place. The regeneration pays special attention to that spirit and identity, and considers them as a starting point.
The use of previously mentioned methods is being applied to brownfields and greenfields near the narrow-gauge railway „Srnetica – Šipovo“. The concretization of this method is being done within the making of the preliminary urban-architectural project '' Research – production timber center '', which is referred to the area of the municipality of Istocni Drvar, villages potoci, Srnetica and Uvala respectively.
